Speaking Applications, 8 speaking applications-sculpture, 2011, real-time applications, 5' H x 3' T
The computer engages the viewer with language which persistently and relentlessly speaks of promises of technology or acts that are immediately filled by the utterance of the statement.
Random procedures modify the text-to-speech function of the computer to affect speed, pitch, and rhythm of voice in real-time. Confusion potentially arises, ordering becomes mumbled, and at times, the speed being asked of the computer exceeds the threshold of the processor’s capabilities. When this threshold is exceeded we hear only clicks and starts of words, instead of rational sentences; A system of language that has the capability to break. Each drawing/application was created in MAX/MSP.
